Become a ‘Musher’. A great adventure experience ‘mushing’ your own team of Alaska Huskies over 3 days, deep in the Finnmark Arctic.
This a real adventurous experience, designed to be a stress free, enjoyable adventure across the heartland of the nomadic Sami people and you are highly likely to come across herds of reindeer and the ‘reindeer” people.
The safari covers between 20km and 50km a day, flying across the pristine crisp white ‘dry’ snow and camping either in the wilderness or in basic mountain cabins on the Finnmark Plateau.
The sense of freedom and open space is immense; no roads, no people, no fixed times to adhere to. The safari is completely self contained. No experience is required however a general level of fitness, concentration and balance is required.
Our Husky Lodge is home to between 50 and 60 Alaska husky sled dogs which are highly trained for long-distance racing, expeditions and tours. During your trip you will learn to care for your team of eight huskies, learning to inspect and treat their paws, monitor their condition, take care of their feeding and learning how to harness them in the correct order, according to their hierarchy. These amazing creatures are incredibly friendly and loving and during the safari you will start to understand why these dogs became such a dependable asset to local people.
From the Lodge, the route we take varies according to the weather conditions and will cover varied terrain including frozen lakes and forests.
Your Guides will teach you everything you need to know, from the tents, cooking equipment, how to handle to Huskies and how to ice fish (dinner!) so this is a very educational trip too. The final Lodge is awesome.
Sufficient time is allocated in the Lodge to allow you to enjoy this environment. Snow shoes and other such equipment is provided free of charge.
Suitable for Kids?
Absolutely. They don’t have to be on the back of the sleds, they can sit in the sled of the Guide. The cold is clearly an issue with young children but the reindeer skins are provided for excellent protection.
Two sleds are put onto the back of these dog teams so even if an adult finds this difficult either physically or through balance, we can adjust to put the adult into the sled, no problem.
