Nepal Upper Mustang Trek

Nepal, Upper Mustang

Go back in time and trek in one of the most preserved and ancient regions in the world – Upper Mustang.

Given up by Tibet to Nepal in the 1940’s and despite the passing of centuries, this ancient culture still remains. Having a trans-himalayan climate, it receives very little rain and is therefore a very dry barren environment; strange in the presence of some of the tallest, white capped peaks in the world.

This is a real travelling adventure; drive from Kathmandu through Nepal’s countryside to Pokhara, fly over the impressive Annapurnas to the tiny remote mountain airstrip of Jomson before a 3hr trek to Kagbeni at Upper Mustang’s border. Your journey back in time through a region that was only opened to tourists in 1992 begins here.

The trek to Lo-Manthang takes 5 days ascending slowly to a max altitude of 4010m. The wonderfully shaped terrain has been moulded by the wind and rain over centuries and generally follows the Kali Ghandaki river. This barren landscape has a real beauty to it, changing colours with the light. From Lo-Manthang, the Chinese border is not far to the north.

After a day’s rest exploring the local area, you head back to Jomson on a slightly different route. Having arrived back in Pokhara, relax in your well appointed 4* hotel (with a pool), just minutes from the centre of town. There are lots of adventure activities available including paragliding, microliting, mountain bikes and boats for hire on the Phewa Lake. Or just relax and enjoy the shops and restaurants.

Fly back to Kathmandu, an overnight stay before your final departure.

Land Only clients – we will collect you from Kathmandu’s airport on arrival.

Day 1 – Depart UK
Fly from London bound for Kathmandu (overnight flight).

Day 2 – Arrive Kathmandu
On arrival in Kathmandu, you will be collected by our Representative and transferred to the hotel. Our friendly staff are on hand to provide any advice or assistance you need. Time to explore your surroundings and generally settle in.

Day 3 – Drive to Pokhara
An early start for the 6hr drive through rural Nepal to reach Pokhara with lunch en route. On arrival, you are free to explore this lovely lake side town and remember, you will return here post trek. B

Day 4 –  Fly to Jomson, trek to Kagbeni
After an early breakfast transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Jomsom; a fantastic scenic 20 min flight over the mountains. With traditional afternoon strong winds behind you, it should be an easy 3-4hrs trek to the Upper Mustang border town of Kagbeni. Enjoy this charming village and walk to the border where you’ll cross tomorrow. BLD

Day 5 – Trek Kagbeni – Chele (3050m)
Special permits checked, we head upstream to Tangbe village with its narrow alleys amongst white washed houses. There is some climbing to be done and it’s interesting to see the Kali Ghandaki river flowing through  a tunnel of rock.  5 – 6 hrs. BLD

Day 6 – Trek Chele (3050m) – Syanbochen (3475m)
There is plenty of varied terrain today as it ascends and descends its way to Syanbochen. You cross the Taklam La Pass (3,624m), across plateaus, follow streams and plenty of Juniper trees. Watch for the Ramchung Cave. 6-7 hrs, BLD

Day 7 – Trek Syanbochen – Ghaymi (3520m)
Head straight for the Yamda La (3,850m) passing local villages, which are very much in the Tibetan style as you would expect. Another pass (the Nyi Pass (4,010m)) is not too far away before descending to Ghaymi. 5-6 hrs. BLD

Day 8 – Trek Ghaymi – Charang (3500m)
A very pleasant trek today, across the Ghaymi Khola (river), before ascending to a plateau with a very long Mani wall. The trail then tracks to the village of Charang with its huge white dzong and red Gompa. 4-5 hrs, BLD

Days 9/10 –  Trek to Lo-Mangthang (3700m) and rest day
A great trek today to Lo-Mangthang with its magnificent views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peaks. The trail descends to the Charang Chu Canyon and then climbs steeply after the river. It’s then over the windy Lo Pass (3,850m) before seeing the walled city below and ahead of you. 5-6 hrs. On your rest day, explore the local area so close to the Tibean border.  BLD

Days 11/12/13 – Trek Drakmar (3810m) – Ghilling (3806m) – Chhuksang (3050m)
The return journey is by no means the same as it is against the prevailing winds so it is best done early mornings. There are links with the Tigers Nest Monastery in Bhutan along here as the 1200 year old Ghar Gompa has the same character Guru Rinpoche as the primary figure. A longish day at 6 – 7 hrs.

Day 12 gets to Ghilling (5 – 6 hrs), followed by Chhuksang, 5 – 6 hrs. BLD

Day 14 – Trek to Jomson
Whilst this is potentially a long day, it is mainly flat along the river bed. It’s lunch at Kagbeni before the final few hours back into Jomson, with a head wind! Head down and think of that beer! Rest here overnight, 6 – 7 hrs, BLD

Day 15 – Fly to Pokhara, overnight
We get the early flight to Pokhara, straight back over Poon Hill and transfer to your hotel. On arrival, make full use of the 4* hotel’s facilites after which you are free to explore the town once again. B

Day 16 – Pokhara
Free day to explore this lovely chiilled out lake side town or just relax. It also acts as a spare day in case of delays out of Jomson. B

Day 17 – Fly to Kathmandu
A 30 min morning flight back to Kathmandu, transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free. B

Day 18 – Depart Nepal, B
