Our comprehensive 5-day Tour covers the western part of Bhutan.
Culturally, Bhutan is a unique country. Reputed to be the last traditional Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, just to view their spartan way of life is an experience. Any traveller has to visit Bhutan at least once.
Our 5 day comprehensive tour of western Bhutan covers Thimphu, Paro, Punakha and Wangdue as well as the Tiger’s Nest.
We recommend our itinerary of using Kathmandu as the access point to fly to Bhutan as the 55 min direct flight into Paro flys straight past Mt Everest. You’ll be pushed to get a better view!
Our tour arrives into Paro and drives straight to Thimphu. You will have time to unwind and relax along the streets as you begin to explore a small captial city with little or no traffic! You have the following day to see the interesting markets at a leisurely pace, the must see Memorial Chorten, huge Dzong and numerous other optional interesting sites. Moving on, we drive over the 3000m Doche La Pass (fantastic views of the eastern Himalaya) and down into the lush green valley that is home to Punakha and Wangdue. We spend a night here; Punakha’s Dzong is probably the best in Bhutan.
A relaxing drive back to Paro to explore that area, including a visit to the iconic Tigers Nest. That cannot be missed.
You depart the following morning, back to Kathmandu and onto to London.
- Fly into Bhutan straight passed Mt Everest
- The ‘must see’ Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Take the time to stroll around the town to familiarise yourself with the general lie of the land! Overnight Thimphu. LD
This day is dedicated to the Thimphu area. There is enough in this area to keep you busy throughout the day and depending on the weather and your wishes, you can visit and/or see the following:
The huge and imposing Thimphu Dzong, the Radio Tower, the many craft shops, the numerous interesting Govt buildings (the Library is good), Traditional School of Arts and Craft, Indigenous Hospital, Textile Museum, Handicraft Emporium and the Hand-made Paper factory and the Zilukha Nunnery (one of the very few monasteries for female monks still in existence).
Perhaps ask your Guide to take you to one of the local restaurants (no additional cost).

Drive to Punakha/Wangdue
In the morning you will drive across the Doche La Pass (over 3150m) and down to the Punakha/Wangdue valley. Approx 3hrs.From the Pass, there are some great views of the Eastern Himalaya on a clear day; be sure to stop for tea! Visit the Punahka Dzong, once the capital of Bhutan (until 1955). This impressive building has survived four big fires and an earthquake, which destroyed many historic documents. It is now, as with many Dzongs, the administrative centre for the District. In the afternoon, visit Wangdue and the local market there. Overnight Punahka or Wangdue. BLD
Drive back to Paro
After breakfast, drive back to Thimphu (stop for coffee or lunch) and then onto Paro. Visit the ‘Watch Tower’, which is now the National Museum. Explore the streets of Paro or relax. Overnight Paro. BLD
Paro (Tigers Nest)
If you wish, you can witness a local school assembly where children sing the National Anthem and also visit the Rinpung Dzong. The afternoon is spent getting to and visiting the Tigers Nest monastery. This iconic Monastery is perched 900m off of the valley floor and takes around 90 mins – 2 hrs to trek there. The path can be quite steep in places. It is well worth the effort. Overnight Paro. BLD
