There are no roads, no villages, no people, just total silence and a sea of sand. At night, the sky is an array of bright stars and you can even see the satellites zooming across the sky. This is the great Sahara Desert.

Imagine what it is like to be surrounded by sand, sand and even more sand. In complete contrast to mountain environments, experience life in the desert.

The large banner image above is of Ait Ben Haddou, the spectacular Ksar where part of the film Gladiator was filmed; you will see this en route to the Sahara.

On arrival in Marrakesh, you will be transferred to your hotel to savour the delights of this ancient city. After a leisurely brekfast the following morning you will drive straight over the High Atlas mountains and into the southern Moroccan town of Ouarzazate. Known as the Gateway to the Desert, you will stay here in a delightful and typically Maroc hotel for the night before continuing your scenic journey south through the Draa valley.

Once you reach the town of M'Hamid you will literally have hit the end of the road; the desert starts here*. You will join your support crew, complete with camels carrying your luggage and support equipment and begin trekking. With civilization behind you will slowly disappear as you trek deeper into the sand. Some of the dunes are massive! The sand can be very soft or quite hard packed so the conditions do vary. You can even walk barefoot for miles in this stuff!

Traveling with your Berber Guide from camp to camp, you will wonder how on earth he knows where he is going; there are very few if any landmarks from which to navigate! The heat in the winter months is not quite enough to have you diving for the nearest oasis but it will certainly be over 25 degrees. You will see and climb the big sand dunes, notably 'Eric', a big soft sand dune that can be seen for miles around and takes some climbing! All of your meals are prepared by a skilled camp chef and there's no shortage of food. They even bake bread in dug sandpits as the trek progresses!

The desert environment is a wonderful place to sit and ponder; the sunsets are very special.

* Please be wary of 'desert trips' that use the area anywhere north of M'Hamid, ie Zagora. This is not the Sahara desert but a small area with the odd dune!

Trek for the Royal Brompton Hospital (19 - 28 Nov 2010)

Celena Perry is trekking in the Sahara to raise money to support Rose Ward of the Royal Brompton Hospital. Had it not been for the expertise and outstanding professional care, her 6 year old daughter Becky would not be here today. At 3 months old, she needed open heart surgery to save her life.

It's still not over for this little lady as she develops. Celena has to say thank you somehow and she has chosen to do this.

If you want to trek with Celena, contact Travel and Trek.

After recent presentations, the group size is already increasing and flights being booked. E-mail Terry Crosby to get on this trek. Other contact details are at the bottom of the page.

This trek has no set up or registration fees or pre-set sponsorship targets. The charity will be grateful for any donations that it receives. If you do not wish to raise money (some people do find it difficult), then that's fine, come along anyway. There is no pressure.

If you are going to trek in the Sahara, why not help our Armed Forces! Clients will be encouraged to raise money for the charity but it is not a formal requirement. The cost of the trip (flights and trek itself) should be paid for by the client (not supplemented by the money raised).

Travel and Trek will assist with the paperwork for fundraising. We will also develop and maintain a web presence for the group as it builds.

Charity Treks without hefty set up fees.

Have you ever been put off from joining a Charity trek due to the huge fund raising target or big set up fee? It doesn't have to be that way. Charities are always looking for funds of course but they will also be very grateful for anything received, no matter how small.

We offer you the opportunity to join our treks and indeed, you may trek for any charity you wish. The challenge of the trek is still there; the pressure of raising huge amounts is not. All we ask is that you pay for the trek yourself; any money you raise should go to the charity of your choice.

If you require any further information, please call Travel and Trek, the contact details are at the bottom of every web page.
