Dades Mgoun Traverse
This great 9 day trip covers a lot of ground and is one of the best value for money treks on the Travel and Trek programme.
On arrival in Marrakesh you will be met by your Travel and Trek representative before driving over the mighty High Atlas mountains. This drive alone will show you the beauty of this country before you descend to Ouarzazate, nicknamed 'Gateway to the Desert', for your overnight hotel stop.
From Ouarzazate, you will drive into the beautiful Dades area to begin your one way trek from south to north across the Mgoun Massif (summiting the 2nd highest point in North Africa). This trek gets deep into the real Morocco meeting the villagers and Nomads alike with their camels as they graze on the green higher slopes.
Although relatively unknown, Mgoun (4070m) is a mere 97m lower than the more popular Mt Toubkal and the views are arguably better. You will get 360 deg views of the High Atlas, including Toubkal itself. It is also far less trekked.
Be sure to take some suitable footwear for water crossing as you will cross numerous streams and rivers that will entail getting your feet wet!
Summit day is during the latter part of the trek. Due to a quirk of nature, fossils can be found on the summit ridge so keep your eyes open!
It takes just one and a half days to descend down to Ait Bougamez from the summit. On completion of this wonderful trek, you will be transported back to Marrakesh where you can treat yourself to a well deserved evening out to sample the delights of this unique city.
Note that if your intended flight arrives in Marrakesh late afternoon (or later), it will necessitate arriving the day before and staying overnight in Marrakesh in order to get the transport to Ouarzazate. The overnight accommodation is not included in the price.
