Mt Mgoun Trek

Guaranteed departure 19 May 2012.

The Mt Mgoun Massif region of the High Atlas is stunning. Beautiful mountain scenery, flowing rivers, a cracking long and deep gorge to wade through and remote Berber villages make this one of the best trekking routes in the High Atlas. It's remoteness and less well known name means that very few trekkers venture here.

Combined with the drive across the High Atlas and up the Dades valley, this 9 day challenging trekking trip in the Mgoun massif covers a lot of Morocco and in our opinion is one of the best value for money treks on our programme.

On arrival in Marrakesh you will be met by your Guide and transferred to your Riad. After your overnight stop, you will drive over the High Atlas mountains. This drive alone, with the Mt Mgoun massif on your left side, will show you the beauty of this country before you descend to Ouarzazate for a lunch stop en route to the start of the trek.

This trek gets deep into the real Morocco meeting the villagers and Nomads alike with their camels as they graze on the higher green slopes.

Be sure to take some suitable footwear for wading through lots of water as you will cross numerous streams and rivers that will entail getting your feet (and possibly knees) very wet!

Initially, this trek meanders its way through the lower fertile slopes with rural villages before crossing two 3000m Passes.

Summit day is during the latter part of the trek and is a longer day. The summit ridge (it begins at the summit of Mt Mgoun) is quite exposed and weather permitting is a fantastic place to be; the views are wonderful. Due to a quirk of nature, fossils can be found on the ridge so keep your eyes open!

Your final full days trekking is an ascent over a 3400m Pass and then a long descent down to Ait Bougamez, where you may spend a night in a classic Maroc mountain Gite. A short trek the following day will complete it and you will then be transported back to Marrakesh where you can treat yourself to a well deserved evening out to sample the delights of this unique city.
