Trekking in Ladakh

The trekking region of Ladakh is high, remote and is the least populated region of India. Ladakh is also wedged between two of the largest mountain ranges on the planet: the Karakoram and the mighty Himalayas. Often referred to a 'Little Tibet', it gives reference to the regions desert like terrain, albeit a mountain one. Don't underestimate this region for trekking because it is little known; it is absolutely fantastic.

We offer 3 treks in Ladakh, all described on this page: Markha Valley, Lamayuru - Chilling and Lamayuru - Spituk.

These treks are superb for expedition style trips (clubs, schools, etc...). Early planning is essential.

Shut off by snow for approx 8 months of the year, the trekking window in this region is quite small. To get to Leh, it is an international flight to Delhi and an internal flight to Leh from there. Leh is one of the highest commercial airports in the world (approx 3500m) and therefore you should always plan on staying in Leh for a few days to acclimatize (our itineraries ensure that you do).

Of all of our treks, Ladakh is the most visually stunning with its colourful geology and enormous ranging views from the Passes right across the Karakoram.

All 3 of these treks follow similar itineraries on the way into and out of Leh; just the trekking itineraries are different. Whilst you are acclimatising, we use the time to show you around the local area.

Markha Valley Trek (9 days on trek)

Markha Valley Trekking itinerary and information

The Markha Valley runs parallel to the Indus river with a 5000m ridge separating them. This trek crosses that ridge twice.

The combination of very high altitude Passes and a relatively low valley trek following a glacial river in remote conditions with very few other trekkers make this trek very special indeed. The flora and fauna are also in abundance and the elusive snow leopard still genuinely roams in these parts.

This trek begins in Spituk and after a few days you will have crossed the Ganda La Pass (4971m) and be close to the Markha Valley floor at Skiu. By now you will have seen the rather unique 'parachute cafes' dotted around the area. From Skiu you follow the flowing glacial river slowly ascending day after day until you finally reach Nimaling.

A day is spent acclimatising here before you ascend up and over the 5400m Konmaru Pass, which is higher than Everest Base Camp. The views are superb; a real sense of achievement before you descend to Chogdo. You exit at Martselang. A 2hr drive will take you back to Leh; time to rest and celebrate.

Treat yourselves to a rest day in this Buddhist environment before flying back to Delhi.

On your return to Delhi, you are free to connect to your international flight or extend your stay as you wish. Travel and Trek can assist you with any extensions from hotels to excursions to Agra and beyond.

Lamayuru to Spituk Trek (9 days on trek)

Lamayuru Ladakh trekking itinerary and information

This trek is a combination of the trek below and some of the Markha Valley trek in reverse. The bridge across the Zanakar river has now made this possible.

The first part of this trek is the Hidden Valley trek as described below. When you reach Chilling, you will cross the river and continue to trek, eventually arriving at Skiu.

Skiu is on the Markha Valley trek and it is here that you reverse that route heading up and over the Ganda La and down to Spituk.

Lamayuru to Chilling Trek (the Hidden Valley, 6 days on trek)

Chilling Ladakh trek itinerary and information

This is the shortest trek and begins further north, a few hours drive from Leh. The trek itself runs south east towards the Markha Valley and stops just on the Zanskar river. It is more remote than the Markha Valley. Despite the length of trek, it still reaches a significant altitude (4900m) with views to match.

It is wonderful shorter alternative to the Markha Valley.
