India - Trekking Options

India has some superb and diverse trekking areas backed up by some wonderful cities to explore, most notably Delhi and Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).

The Indian Himalaya is perhaps not as well known as Nepal but it is no less spectacular. It stretches from Bhutan in the east to Pakistan in the west with only Nepal breaking its presence in India.

The trekking areas are split between two distinct areas:

To the north-east, there is Darjeeling and Sikkim offering classic mountain trekking to altitudes of up approximately 5000m. You can access this area from either Delhi or Kolkata. From either city you will then fly to Bagdogra and drive in from there.

To the north-west lies the remote and challenging area of Ladakh. It is close to both China (Tibet) and Pakistan; it is very mountainous and is known for its extreme temperatures and desert like terrain. The region is accessed by internal flight from Delhi into Leh (one of the highest commercial airports in the world (3500m)). Cut off by snow for the majority of the year, the trekking season is just a few months long between June and early September. A strong Buddhist region, it has some excellent geology, flora and fauna.

Travel and Trek offers the following treks in India:

The Singalila Ridge (NE India). By Himalayan standards, a relatively short trek of 5 or 6 days that follows the Nepal/India border from south to north towards Sikkim. Great views of Kanchenjunga. The whole trip is a great experience.

Goecha La Trek (NE India). This wonderful 7 day trek stretches as far north as it can go to the 4900m Goecha La affording unparalleled views of the Kangchenjunga Massif.

Markha Valley Trek (Ladakh, NW India). One of the best treks on the Travel and trek programme. A 12 day remote trek in amongst some fantastic terrain. Accessed through Delhi and then into Leh.

Tailor Made. Travel and Trek can tailor make a trip to your requirements, to include additional trekking, touring (sightseeing) or a mixture of both.
