Everest Base Camp & Island Peak

Guaranteed departures on 25 Sep and 20 Oct 2010

Two soldiers, one mountain. Support Nikk and Tom in their quest this autumn. Read more>>

Island Peak is just over 20,000' (6189m) and represents a fantastically rewarding challenge for non-climbers. Whilst there is some snow climbing to be done you do not need any previous climbing experience to reach the summit. Island Peak is higher than Kilimanjaro and before you get there, you will have acclimatized by going to the highest Base Camp in the world.

Got 2 mins?.....grab a coffee and watch this very recent, inspirational and atmospheric video of EBC and Island Peak. It was produced by Travel and Trek client Jonathan Crookes.

Travel and Trek - Island Peak

Tucked well into the Everest Khumbu region, you will trek for 8/9 days until you reach EBC. One great advantage of this combined trip is that the trek to the Base Camp provides that vital acclimatization period, which negates any additional acclimatization for Island Peak.

Only 3 days after you leave EBC you will be positioned in either the Base or High Camp (both tented) of Island Peak ready to summit the following day. It is an early start to begin the 4 hr ascent to the 'crampon point', where you need to don your climbing gear before continuing on towards Island Peak itself. By this time, the sun will have risen; the views are absolutely brilliant.

By now, you will be able to see the summit and once at the base of the main snow and ice wall it is a case of attaching yourself to the fixed ropes (for safety) and using the skills that you have been taught, and make you way up to the ridge and then finally up to the summit itself. From this stunning white view point, you can only sit in awe at the vista that lies before you. The views of the mighty Lhotse, Lhotse Sha, Makalu and the lesser known but fantastic Ama Dablam are just a few kilometers away.

Accompanying you all of the way will be your specialist climbing Sherpa (not the same person as your Guide). The climbing Sherpa’s job is to ensure that you are comfortable with your climbing equipment and know how to use it. You will be taught how to use it and practice at Island Peak’s Base Camp.

The specialist equipment that you will need can be hired (you will be assisted in the hire, cost approx £40 (max)) and includes boots, crampons, a harness, an ice axe, a jumor and karabiners. The boots are an essential element of your equipment due to the fit and DO need to be hired in Kathmandu, the rest may be available further up the trail saving you money on the duration of hire and weight. Your Guide will sort this out for you. Your safety is of paramount importance and you will be trained in the use of this equipment by your Sherpa climbing guide.

These serving British soldiers lost a colleague during their last tour of Afghanistan. Their fallen comrade left behind a loving fiancee and two young daughters. SSAFA is a military charity that is devoted to looking after the families in such tragic circumstances. Financing the entire EBC and Island Peak trip themselves, they are looking for public support by way of donations, however small, to support this worthwhile charity.
