Background knowledge of getting to Bhutan and its pricing policy is also useful at an early planning stage.
Trekking. With little or no infrastructure in the mountains to support trekking, it is still truly a wild and remote experience (all camping). You will see very few fellow trekkers at all. Day walks or multi-day low level treks are there in abundance but to experience the remoteness, we offer the Druk Path or the Chomolhari. Bhutan is also home to something exceptional - the Lunana Snowman Trek.
Cultural Touring. Bhutan has a plethora of fortress-like monasteries (known as Dzongs and include the inspiring Tigers Nest) and similar ancient buildings. This is a Nation of traditional values; National costume, hot stone baths (you should really try one), many craft shops and they just love archery (it is their National sport). A cultural tour will take you deep into Bhutan in a comfortable vehicle using comfortable accommodation to explore as much as your time allows.
Festivals. Why not try the festivals? These colourful and exciting multi-day events capture the traditions that these lovely people follow. The festivals in Paro and Thimphu (spring and autumn respectfully) are the most popular but there are others. Festivals do not take up more than a day or two of your time in Bhutan, so it does make sense to mix them in with your visit.
About Bhutan
Steeped in Buddhist culture and history, this unique and remote country refuses to be influenced by western culture. The people choose to wear National dress and are extremely friendly. Visitors are hosted from the moment they step off the aircraft to the moment they step back on to it. Smoking is banned in public. Thimphu is the only capital city in the world without a set of traffic lights! It once erected a set but the people were so outraged that the lights were removed within hours!
In November 2008, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated in favour of his son, the Crown Prince and the very first democratic elections took place.
Bhutan is considered to be one of the top ten biodiverse hotspots in the world. It has no less than 5 climatic regions within its borders from tropical forests on the southern border with India to very high altitude alpine terrain along the length of its northern border. Apart from the quite unique National animal (the Takin), Bhutan is home to hundreds of species of quite special birds and of course the snow leopard. This country is considered a Rhododendron sanctuary; spectacular in May.
