This has to be one of life's 'must do's' before you die!
There's far more to this trip than just a trek: the villages, the lukla flight, the Sherpas, the Tengbouche monastery, the Khumbu glacier and of course....Everest.
After 36 hrs in the fantastic buzzing hustle and bustle of Kathmandu we experience the unforgettable ~35 min flight into the mountain airstrip of Lukla and go straight into a half day trek.
Acclimatisation is important and your first stepping stone is at the Sherpa captial of Namche Bazaar, just 2 days into the trek. From there as the trek progresses so too does the altitude with the scenery to match. The majestic Ama Dablam soon comes into view and we acclimatise right underneath it in the village of Pherische or Dingbouche.
Just 2/3 days before you reach the Base Camp, you will meet the awesome Khumbu glacier as you climb up the front of it. From there onwards you will trek alongside it and have plenty of opportunity to climb the sides and have a good look at this amazing mass of moving ice (you will probably hear it crack a few times, a sure sign its moving!).
Gorak Shep is the final stop prior to trekking to the Base Camp, indeed it also from here that you will ascend (optional) the highest point on this trek - Kala Patthar (5500m). Kala Patthar affords the best (and fantastic) views of the busy Base Camp (far more active in spring than autumn).
Whilst the 8/9 day trek to the Base Camp is no doubt a physical challenge for some, mainly due to the altitude, taken at the correct pace and responsibly (acclimatisation days are built in) this trek is within reach of most averagely fit people. The rewards are stunning with clear views of the highest peak in the world awaiting you. The descent is much quicker of course (but not all downhill!) as is the flight out of the Lukla airstrip! A few more days to soak up Kathmandu before heading back to London. |
